CARROLLTON BAPTIST CHURCH IN ESSENCE is an assembly of believers who have been given a divine reason for existing. More than programs and special ministries, CBC is a living community in Christ Jesus whose mission is to faithfully carry out the Great Commission and to exemplify the characteristics of a New Testament church. BECAUSE IT IS OUR DESIRE TO BE A MODEL CHURCH, there are several objectives which we must attempt to meet if this is to be realized. Striving to truly know God is the foremost priority. Approaching this objective will be manifested through Spirit-led corporate worship as well as by a high view of, and total submission to, the authority of God's Word. Another priority is the spreading of the Gospel. As a church, we truly fall short of modeling the New Testament role if there is failure to evangelize our world. Our task is to faithfully obey this commission. Maturing into Christ-likeness is a third priority. Performed by the Holy Spirit, this ministry is accomplished as the believer grows in the knowledge and understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ. IN OUR EFFORT TO BECOME A MODEL CHURCH, we will strive to reach the essence of the following: passionately exalting Christ in everything; joyfully extending mercy to everyone. CHURCH COVENANT
The Christian's Thanksgiving What Makes it Unique? This year Thanksgiving Day falls on November 27. It is a special day for most Americans and a holiday in which Christians can wholeheartedly participate. Perhaps its greatest virtue lies in the fact that people are prompted to reflect on all the blessings they enjoy that originate from a Source outside themselves. In other words, it is a natural time for our culture to remember that God exists and that He has abundantly blessed us. But the Christian's thanksgiving celebration is different from the rest of the culture's is some very profound ways. First, we are to practice giving thanks all the time. Every day is a day for giving thanks. Every circumstance is an occasion for giving thanks. For the Christian being grateful is a constant attitude and not one that merely occurs once a year. "Give thanks in all circumstance," Paul writes (1 Thess. 5.18a). Why can the Christian do that? The believer can do this because he knows that God is using everything in his life to work his good (Ro. 8.28). He knows that there are no circumstances which are out of God's control and which God can not convert for the Christian's good. This brings us to a second thing that makes the Christian's thanksgiving unique. Because he has a perpetually grateful attitude regardless of the circumstances, the Christian is radically different from others. His thanksgiving sets him apart from the rest of culture. What is the typical response of others to unfavorable circumstances? Is it not to complain and murmur? Is it not to grow angry and bitter and perhaps even hateful? Of course, the Christian is not exempt from feeling such emotions, but he is to act upon God's will and be thankful instead. Again, hear Paul's words: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God." (1 Thess. 5, a,b). The last thing that makes the Christian's thanksgiving so unique is this: It reflects a behavior that is consistent with our union with Christ. "Give thanks in all circumstance; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thess. 5.18). Christians can constantly give thanks because they are new creations in Christ. We have a new power within that enables such a praiseworthy practice and attitude. Unlike those who are outside of Christ and are unable to do what Paul commands in (1 Thess. 5.18), the Christian's union with Christ is precisely the reason he is able to do what the apostle commands. In summary, the Christian's thanksgiving is unique. It is unique because it is year round. It is unique because it sets the Christian apart from the rest of the surrounding culture. It is unique because it reflects the relationship the Christian has with his Lord, Jesus Christ. My dear brothers and sisters, let us consider the apostle's words carefully. Giving thanks in all circumstances is a wonderful way to commend the gloriousness of our Savior to the rest of the world who find little in which to be thankful.
Grace be to you, Passionately exalting Christ in everything; joy fully extending mercy to everyone.
